About
Lavinia Meijer has a rare gift for pulling classical harp into unexpected territory. Her 2012 album of Philip Glass pieces, which she transcribed for harp herself with Glass's blessing, shot straight to the top of the Dutch rock charts, a striking result for an instrument not usually associated with that world. Two years later, her Sony Classical debut Passaggio, built around the music of Ludovico Einaudi, hit number one on the iTunes Classical Charts and earned critical praise across the board. Beyond recordings, Meijer has performed everywhere from the Israel Philharmonic to a solo evening at Carnegie Hall, and she regularly steps in as a substitute with the Concertgebouw Orchestra. She has also been a magnet for new commissions, with composers including Carlos Michans and Garrett Byrnes writing works specifically for her. Her candlelit acoustic concerts, where she plays the Glass transcriptions, have become a signature part of how she reaches audiences outside the traditional concert hall.
