About
Licks & Brains is a large soul, funk and jazz ensemble led by bandleader and arranger Rolf Delfos. The group draws on the full breadth of the groove tradition, blending big band energy with danceable funk and classic soul textures. Their lineup is substantial: a full brass section of trumpets, trombones and saxophones alongside guitar, bass, drums, percussion, and keys including Fender Rhodes and Hammond organ. That kind of firepower makes their live shows genuinely hard to replicate. The band has recorded a Christmas album featuring jazz, funk and soul interpretations of well known holiday songs, following in a tradition associated with artists like James Brown, Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder. Live, they frequently collaborate with guest vocalists, including Mrs. Hips (Simone Roerade, known for her work with Candy Dulfer) and vocalist Jared Grant, whose influences run from James Brown and Prince to Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder.
