About
Signing to Blue Note in 2010 was a statement move for a Dutch jazz pianist and vocalist, and Ruben Hein made it count. His debut album Loose Fit, recorded in Malmö with producers Stefan Kruger and Fons Merkies, set the tone: warm, soulful, sitting somewhere between jazz and pop. He toured widely after that, playing the North Sea Jazz Festival, Eurosonic Noorderslag and the Java Jazz Festival in Jakarta. A personal highlight came in 2011 when he performed Ain't No Sunshine in front of Bill Withers himself at a sold out Royal Theater Carré. Hein has kept restless ever since. His 2012 release Revisited stripped things back to piano only, reinterpreting songs from Loose Fit without any vocals. Hopscotch followed in 2013 and won him the Edison Public Award. He then spent a stretch as keyboardist and backing vocalist for British singer songwriter Fink, touring Europe and playing Lowlands and Sziget. His 2018 album Groundwork Rising showed yet another side, and in early 2020 he sailed to Antarctica for an artist residency that fed into a documentary called Sounds Of The South.
