About
Liesbeth List had one of those voices that made French chansons feel completely at home in Dutch. She built her reputation through years of performing alongside Ramses Shaffy in the theatre show Shaffy Chantant, and her knack for interpreting other songwriters' material became her calling card. Her Dutch version of Jacques Brel's songs went gold, and Brel himself showed up in person to hand her the award. Mikis Theodorakis personally invited her to record his Mauthausen Ballad, which became both a critical and commercial hit. After a quieter period in the late 1980s, producer Frank Boeijen brought her back into the spotlight in 1994, and she picked up an Edison for the album they made together. She then threw herself into the role of Edith Piaf in a musical that ran for 170 shows and earned her the John Kraaijkamp Musical Award twice over. Her final album, Echo, released in 2015, was a tribute to Ramses Shaffy, a fitting close to a career so deeply intertwined with his.
