About
Liturgy coined their own term for what they do: transcendental black metal. Founded in Brooklyn by Haela Hunt Hendrix as a solo project, the band grew into a four piece and quickly built a reputation for pushing the genre into genuinely strange territory. Their 2011 album Aesthethica landed on Spin's 50 Best Albums of that year, and The Ark Work from 2015 went further still, pulling in hip hop, electronics and progressive rock alongside the metal, earning the number one avant garde album slot from both Spin and Rolling Stone. Hunt Hendrix is also the creative force behind a full video opera, Origin of the Alimonies, which premiered at National Sawdust in New York and later moved to a live action staging in Los Angeles. The sixth studio album, 93696, arrived in 2023, and tracks like Caela and Daily Bread show the band still restless and evolving rather than settling into any comfortable formula.
