Deafheaven built their reputation by smashing together black metal aggression and shoegaze dreaminess into something critics eventually labelled blackgaze, a sound few bands had ever pulled off so convincingly. Their 2013 album Sunbather was one of the most talked about records of that year in the US, landing on countless year end lists and introducing the San Francisco band to an audience way beyond the metal underground. From there they kept pushing the formula: New Bermuda in 2015, Ordinary Corrupt Human Love in 2018, and then Infinite Granite in 2021, which leaned so far into shoegaze and clean vocals that it caught plenty of longtime fans off guard. The 2025 album Lonely People with Power pulled things back toward their heavier roots, and recent tracks like Magnolia, Heathen, and Doberman suggest the band is very much in an active, energized stretch right now.
