Few orchestras can claim a founding story as dramatic as the London Philharmonic Orchestra's. Sir Thomas Beecham essentially built it from scratch in 1932 after failed negotiations with the BBC, pulling together 106 players and shaping one of Britain's defining ensembles. The ambition was explicit: match the best orchestras in Europe and America, and by most accounts they delivered. Based at the Royal Festival Hall, the LPO has racked up an extraordinary range of work beyond the concert stage. Their recording history stretches back to the very beginning, with hundreds of sessions for EMI, Decca and others, and since 2005 they have run their own label releasing live concert recordings. Film buffs will know their sound from Lawrence of Arabia and the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy. Principal conductors over the decades have included Bernard Haitink, Georg Solti and Vladimir Jurowski, with Edward Gardner taking the baton in 2021.
