About
Rotterdam singer songwriter Mark Lotterman has been quietly building a distinctive catalogue since his 2007 debut Pain & Entertainment, which featured a collaboration with American alt country oddball Johnny Dowd. His songs lean on an observational, almost deadpan writing style, zooming in on everyday scenes, social dynamics and emotional distance, all wrapped in spare, unfussy arrangements that keep the focus firmly on the storytelling. A second album Better Things to Do followed on Rotterdam's Tocado Records, and his third record Funny got a boost when the track I Miss You cracked the iTunes Top 10 after a columnist picked it up. His fifth album Holland, released in 2017, grew into something bigger than a standard record release. Artists, scientists, school classes and community organisations all contributed work inspired by Lotterman's songs, resulting in a book and several exhibitions. After a six year break working in youth care, he returned in 2023 with Stedentrip, his first Dutch language album, featuring a duet with Lucky Fonz III and a recording made with poet Hans Verhagen in the church at Ruigoord.
