About

Few bands have made Bruce Springsteen sound quite like Manfred Mann's Earth Band did on 'Blinded by the Light', the slow, synth drenched version that hit number one in the US in 1977 and became one of the defining rock moments of that decade. Formed in London in 1971 by South African keyboardist Manfred Mann, the band built its identity around a distinctive blend of progressive rock, Moog synthesizer work, and a knack for reimagining other artists' songs, from Bob Dylan to Springsteen, in ways that often outshone the originals. Their albums ranged widely in subject matter, touching on ecological concerns, space and sci fi themes, social criticism, and anti apartheid politics. Mann had a genuine fascination with classical music too, weaving in material from Holst, Schubert, Debussy, and Stravinsky. The band's lineups shifted over the years, but the Earth Band kept going, and they continue to perform to this day.
