Manticora have been one of Denmark's more ambitious metal acts since forming in Hvidovre back in 1996, built around the brother duo of Lars and Kristian Larsen. Their sound sits at the crossroads of power metal and progressive metal, with a noticeable thrash edge running through it, and their lyrics lean heavily into literature, fantasy, and science fiction rather than the genre's typical sword and sorcery clichés. That concept driven ambition showed clearly with The Black Circus, a two part story spread across albums released in 2006 and 2007. They have kept the momentum going with a steady stream of releases, including the double concept pair To Kill to Live to Kill and To Live to Kill to Live. Their most recent album, Mycelium, came out in January 2024 through Mighty Music, showing the band is still very much in creative mode.
