About
Also known as: José Manuel Tomás Arturo Chao Ortega, José-Manuel Thomas Arthur Chao, M. Chao, Manuchao
Manu Chao sings in at least ten languages, which tells you a lot about what makes him tick. Born in Paris to Spanish parents, he spent years busking and playing in subway stations before co founding the genre blending band Mano Negra in 1987. That band became a serious force across Europe and South America, mixing punk, rockabilly, and pretty much anything else that fit the mood, before splitting in 1995. Going solo, Chao travelled through South and Central America with his live outfit Radio Bemba Sound System, soaking up street sounds and recording as he went. The result was Clandestino in 1998, a slow burning record that eventually sold over five million copies and picked up the Best World Music Album at the Victoires de la Musique. Its follow up Próxima Estación: Esperanza arrived in 2001 and kept the momentum going with heavier Caribbean flavours. Tracks like Bongo Bong and Me Gustas Tu remain touchstones for anyone who stumbled into his world.
