About

Also known as: Martel

If you've ever done a double take hearing what sounds exactly like Freddie Mercury coming out of your speakers, there's a good chance it was actually Marc Martel. The Montreal born, Nashville based singer became the go to vocal stand in for Queen's late frontman, most notably lending his voice to the 2018 biopic Bohemian Rhapsody. Producer Graham King put it bluntly: most of the singing scenes in the film relied on either original Queen master tapes or new recordings by Martel, saying you could close your eyes and it's Freddie. Before all the Queen comparisons, Martel spent years fronting the Christian rock band Downhere, which racked up Juno and Dove Awards and released a string of albums out of Nashville. His solo path took a sharp turn in 2011 when a YouTube clip of him covering Somebody to Love went viral practically overnight, landing him a spot on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and eventually a touring role with the Queen Extravaganza. His covers of Bohemian Rhapsody, Killer Queen and others have kept his channel buzzing, and a 2019 recording of Silver Bells with Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith hit number one on the Billboard Christian AC charts.
