About
Maria Iskariot are a Dutch language punk band from Ghent, Belgium, who made a serious splash in 2024 by winning Humo's Rock Rally, the country's most storied contest for emerging rock acts. Their band name deliberately mashes together the Virgin Mary and the traitor Judas Iscariot, that tension between good and evil running right through their sound. The four piece, featuring vocalist Helena Cazaerck, guitarist Loeke Vanhoutteghem, bassist Amanda Barbossa, and drummer Sybe Versluys, put out their debut EP 'EN/EN' on Burning Fik, the label run by Faberyayo and Abel van Gijlswijk. A live session on Radio Willy went viral and caught the attention of some unexpected listeners, including the father of Billie Eilish and producer Justin Raisen, who has worked with Kim Gordon, Charli XCX, and Lil Yachty. That buzz led to an invitation from Australian band Tropical Fuck Storm to open their North European and UK tour, with sold out shows of around 500 people in Berlin, Copenhagen, and seven UK venues. Festival appearances at Pukkelpop and the Gentse Feesten rounded out a breakout year.
