Martin Oei is a Dutch pianist with a particular affinity for the Russian piano repertoire. His programmes trace a sweep through that tradition, from the folk influences of Balakirev and the mystical sound world of Scriabin, through the melancholy of Rachmaninoff, to the rhythmic theatricality of Prokofiev and Stravinsky. It is a range that moves between intimate lyricism and full blown virtuoso spectacle, covering composers who each shaped, and eventually stepped away from, a distinctly Russian musical identity on their way to creating timeless work.
