Few bands carry as much weight in black metal as Mayhem. Formed in Oslo in 1984, they helped define the entire genre before most people even knew what black metal was, drawing on Venom, Slayer, Bathory and Celtic Frost to build something genuinely ferocious and extreme. Their early EP Deathcrush, pressed in just 1,000 copies, sold out immediately and became a foundational document for the genre worldwide. Mayhem's story is inseparable from tragedy and chaos. The deaths of vocalist Dead and guitarist Euronymous, along with the band's connections to church arsons, turned them into something more notorious than almost any act in rock history. Their debut album De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas finally emerged in 1994 and remains a landmark record. The reformed lineup that followed leaned into experimentation, and the 2007 album Ordo Ad Chao took home the Spellemann Award for Best Heavy Metal Album, later earning an Honorary Award in 2021.
