MGMT built their reputation on a debut that felt like an accidental masterpiece. Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser formed the band at Wesleyan University, originally calling themselves The Management, and their 2007 debut Oracular Spectacular turned three songs, "Time to Pretend", "Electric Feel", and "Kids", into genuine indie anthems. The Justice remix of "Electric Feel" won a Grammy, and the band picked up nominations for Best New Artist and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group. They also teamed up with Kid Cudi and Ratatat for "Pursuit of Happiness", which Steve Aoki notably remixed. Rather than chasing that success, MGMT kept shapeshifting. Congratulations in 2010 leaned into psychedelia with Sonic Boom producing, their self titled third album arrived in 2013, and Little Dark Age in 2018 brought a new wave sheen that won over a fresh wave of fans. Their fifth studio album, Loss of Life, landed in 2024, proving that two decades in, the duo still has no interest in standing still.
