French percussionist Mino Cinelu has spent decades quietly becoming one of the most well traveled rhythm players in jazz. Born in Saint Cloud and drawn early to bongos and improvisation on the streets of Paris, he built his reputation through the French jazz fusion scene before relocating to New York at the end of the 1970s. A chance encounter at a soul gig at the New York club Mikkel's landed him a spot in Miles Davis's band, and from there things snowballed fast. Joe Zawinul caught him at the Hollywood Bowl and recruited him for Weather Report, where he also started composing with Zawinul and Wayne Shorter. Cinelu's reach goes well beyond jazz. His discography stretches from sessions with Sting, Kate Bush and Andy Summers to work with Kenny Barron, Pat Metheny Group and Gil Evans. He launched his solo career in earnest with a self titled album in 2000, followed by Quest Journey, a notably eclectic record featuring Bill Frisell, Gerry Leonard and rapper Da Lioness, and then La californie in 2006. Few percussionists have moved so comfortably across that many worlds.
