Mitski has built one of the most distinctive voices in indie rock over the course of seven studio albums, each one shifting and evolving while keeping her emotional directness front and centre. Her breakthrough moment came with Bury Me at Makeout Creek, a raw, guitar driven record that marked a sharp turn from the orchestral piano sound of her earlier student albums. She followed it with Puberty 2 and Be the Cowboy, both of which landed on countless year end lists, and Laurel Hell, which cracked the top ten in several countries. Her profile reached a new peak when she co composed "This Is a Life" with Son Lux for Everything Everywhere All at Once, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song. Her 2023 album The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We gave her another milestone: its single "My Love Mine All Mine" became her first to chart on the Billboard Hot 100. The Guardian called her the best young songwriter in the US, and it is hard to argue.
