About
Modern Color started out playing metalcore in Redondo Beach, California, but after a lineup shake up and some serious exposure to bands like Title Fight, they rebuilt their sound from the ground up. The reconstituted group, anchored by Fleming Valenzuela and Vince Nguyen, leaned into shoegaze textures, irregular rhythms, and a push pull between clean singing and screaming that became their signature. Their 2016 debut album Chromesthesia put them on the map, and by the time Time Slips Behind Us landed in 2017 they were being called one of the defining acts of grungegaze, a genre blending 90s shoegaze with grunge era grit. From the Leaves of Your Garden in 2020 nudged them further toward dream pop territory and brought them genuine international attention, including a headline tour of Japan. Their fourth album There Goes the Dream arrived in 2024, with Stereogum comparing their sound to Midwest shoegaze without fully committing to any one lane. Influences ranging from Hum and the Pixies to Deftones and Deafheaven give you a sense of the range they are working with.
