Also known as: Morbid God
Moonspell are the Portuguese band that put gothic metal on the map for their whole country. They started out as Morbid God in 1989, settled on the new name in 1992, and by 1995 had signed to Century Media and recorded their debut album Wolfheart in Germany. Irreligious followed in 1996, and its single Opium quoted the Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa, a nod to home that became part of their identity. They never stood still. Sin/Pecado in 1998 and The Butterfly Effect in 1999 went experimental, then Darkness and Hope in 2001 and The Antidote in 2003 leaned more rock. The Antidote even came with a companion book by writer José Luís Peixoto, each song paired with a chapter. In 2006 Memorial went to number one in Portugal and made them the first Portuguese metal band with a Gold record. Germany has stayed a stronghold, with their albums regularly landing in the Top 100.
