Few bands can claim to have invented a genre, but Paradise Lost genuinely can. Formed in Halifax in 1988, they are widely regarded as pioneers of death doom and the foundational influence on gothic metal, a sound they helped define on their early Peaceville Records albums before anyone had a name for it. Their second album, Gothic, was the first clear step in that direction, weaving in keyboards and female vocals alongside the crushing heaviness. Over the decades the core lineup of Nick Holmes, Greg Mackintosh, Aaron Aedy, and Steve Edmondson has stayed remarkably steady while the music shifted dramatically, from the gothic metal landmark Draconian Times to Depeche Mode inspired synth pop on One Second, and back to heavy again. Draconian Times remains the spine of their reputation, charting in the UK and German top 20 and selling over two million copies worldwide. Their 2026 album Ascension suggests the band have no plans to coast on that legacy.
