About
Amorphis have spent over three decades shapeshifting through death metal, progressive metal, folk metal, and just about everything in between, all while keeping the Finnish national epic the Kalevala at the heart of much of their lyric writing. Founded in Helsinki in 1990, they found their footing fast: the 1994 album Tales from the Thousand Lakes fused death metal with psychedelia and folk elements in a way that felt genuinely new, and it set the template for everything that followed. Their sound pivoted again with Eclipse in 2006, when new vocalist Tomi Joutsen brought contrasting clean and harsh vocals back into the mix, earning the band gold certification in Finland and winning over a fresh wave of fans. Over time the lineup has shifted but the creative restlessness has stayed constant. Albums like Silent Waters, Under the Red Cloud, and Queen of Time show a band still pushing at the edges of their own style rather than coasting on past glories. Queen of Time featured Dutch vocalist Anneke van Giersbergen on the track Amongst Stars, a moment that captured Amorphis at their most expansive. Their 2022 album Halo is their most recent full length.
