About
Formed in Joensuu, Finland in 1997, Insomnium have carved out a distinct space in melodic death metal by wrapping crushing heaviness in genuine melancholy. Their lyrics lean into themes of darkness, sorrow, loss, and nature, giving their music a poetic weight that sets them apart from most acts in the genre. Elements of doom metal and progressive metal bleed into their sound, and the result feels more immersive than aggressive. One of their boldest moves was Winter's Gate, a seventh album consisting of a single 40 minute track based on a short story by bassist Niilo Sevänen about Vikings seeking a mythical island in the dead of winter. They pulled a similar trick with their ninth album Anno 1696, again rooted in a Sevänen story. With a tenth album reportedly in the works and planned for 2026, Insomnium show no signs of running out of dark, wintry ideas.
