About
Also known as: Samaël
Samael are a Swiss metal band from Sion who have been at it since 1987, and few acts have evolved as dramatically over that stretch. Brothers Vorphalack and Xytraguptor are the core of the group, and one of the things that sets them apart is their use of a drum machine both in the studio and live on stage, a shift that began around the mid 1990s when Xy moved from the drum kit to keyboards and programmed beats. Their sound pulls together metal, industrial, electronic, and symphonic elements, blending massive beats and martial rhythms in a way that feels genuinely their own. Their 1994 album Ceremony of Opposites is probably their most celebrated record, a seminal black metal release that layered crunchy guitars with keyboard orchestration and even sampled the voice of Aleister Crowley. Later albums like Passage and Eternal showed the band pushing further into electronic territory, and they have shared stages with everyone from Iron Maiden to Ministry over the years.
