Few black metal bands have pushed the genre toward full orchestral territory the way Dimmu Borgir have. Formed in Jessheim, Norway in 1993, they built a reputation on combining punishing metal with sweeping symphonic arrangements, a formula that paid off massively when Enthrone Darkness Triumphant landed them on Nuclear Blast and sent them touring with In Flames and Dissection. Their 2003 album Death Cult Armageddon took things even further, recorded alongside the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. By 2007, they had become the first black metal band to hit number one on the Norwegian charts, with In Sorte Diaboli. Despite a revolving cast of members over the years, vocalist Shagrath and guitarist Silenoz have held things together from the start. Their 2010 album Abrahadabra arrived after a deliberate slowdown in the writing process, with Silenoz describing it as epic, atmospheric and carrying an eerie, haunting feel.
