Few bands have pushed Polish extreme metal to the global stage quite like Behemoth. Formed in Gdańsk in 1991, they started deep in black metal territory before gradually hardening their sound into the ferocious blackened death metal they're now known for. That shift really clicked on Satanica and kept evolving through landmark records like Demigod and The Apostasy, the latter landing them a spot on Ozzfest 2007's second stage, one of only four non US acts on the bill that year. Frontman Nergal has kept the band relentlessly active across North America and Europe, sharing stages with everyone from Amon Amarth to Dimmu Borgir. Their 2018 music video for Bartzabel shows they haven't let up on the theatrics or the intensity. Loudwire's staff once ranked them the 50th greatest metal band of all time, which feels modest given how consistently they've delivered.
