Belphegor have been one of Austria's most uncompromising extreme metal exports since forming in Salzburg back in 1991, originally under the name Betrayer. Guitarist and vocalist Helmuth has been the band's driving force and sole constant member, shaping their signature blend of blackened death metal with an unflinching focus on occult and blasphemous imagery drawn from demonology. The band named themselves after the demon Belphegor, and that sense of deliberate darkness runs through everything they do. Over a career spanning more than three decades and a string of albums on Nuclear Blast, Belphegor have built a devoted following in the global extreme metal underground. Standout records like Pestapokalypse VI and Lucifer Incestus cemented their reputation for dense, ferocious riffing paired with a raw, ritualistic atmosphere. Their 2022 video for "The Devils" shows the band still pushing forward with the same intensity that put them on the map.
