Founded in Munich in 1893 by Franz Kaim, the son of a piano manufacturer, the Münchner Philharmoniker has grown into one of the city's three major symphony orchestras. Early on it attracted serious talent, with Felix Weingartner as chief conductor from 1898 and a young Wilhelm Furtwängler making his debut in 1906. Gustav Mahler himself conducted the premieres of his Fourth and Eighth Symphonies with the ensemble, and Bruno Walter led the posthumous premiere of Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde. The orchestra went through turbulent times during both World Wars and the Nazi era, but found its footing again in the postwar decades. Its reputation went truly global under Sergiu Celibidache, who took over in 1979 and famously refused to make studio recordings on principle. Live concert recordings only surfaced after his death in 1996. Since 1985 the orchestra has been based at the Philharmonie in Munich's Gasteig cultural centre, a hall seating over 2300 people.
