About
Few bands have left a mark on heavy music quite like Napalm Death. Formed in Meriden, West Midlands back in 1981, they essentially built the blueprint for grindcore, blending crust punk aggression and death metal brutality into something that still sounds ferocious decades later. Their debut album Scum, put out by Earache Records in 1987, hit the global metal and punk communities like a freight train, and You Suffer from that record holds the Guinness World Record for shortest song ever at just over one second. None of the original members are still in the band, but the current lineup of Barney Greenway, Shane Embury, Danny Herrera and John Cooke has kept the fire burning. By their third album Harmony Corruption in 1990 the band had shifted toward death metal, writing longer and more complex material, and they have kept evolving ever since, picking up industrial and groove elements along the way. Sixteen studio albums in, they remain one of the most influential acts the genre has ever produced, and as of 2003 Nielsen SoundScan ranked them the seventh best selling death metal band in the United States. Loudwire placed them 26th on their all time best metal bands list in 2016.
