About

Also known as: Natalie Anne Merchant

Natalie Merchant made her name as the voice and lyrical brain behind 10,000 Maniacs, the socially conscious college rock band she joined in 1981. After seven albums with the group, she walked away in 1993 wanting full creative control, and within hours of announcing her departure she had already written her first solo song. Her debut solo album Tigerlily came out in 1995 and became a genuine phenomenon, selling over five million copies and spinning off the top ten hit Carnival along with Wonder and Jealousy. The follow up, Ophelia, leaned into lusher, more orchestrated arrangements and featured Kind and Generous, which was inescapable on VH1 and cemented her as a solo force. A co headline slot at Lilith Fair that same summer did not hurt either. Over the years she has kept stretching, from folk traditionalism on The House Carpenter's Daughter to collaborating with composer Gavin Bryars on Shakespeare's sonnets, with a self titled album and Keep Your Courage rounding out a discography that now runs to nine solo studio records.
