About
Also known as: England New Order, EnglandNewOrder, NewOrder
Few bands have reinvented themselves as dramatically as New Order. Rising from the ashes of Joy Division after the death of Ian Curtis in 1980, Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook, Stephen Morris, and Gillian Gilbert forged something entirely new by fusing post punk with electronic dance music. Their 1983 track "Blue Monday" became the best selling 12 inch single of all time, and their albums Power, Corruption & Lies and Technique remain touchstones of the era. New Order were also the driving force behind The Haçienda, the Manchester nightclub that helped define British club culture. Their long collaboration with graphic designer Peter Saville gave them one of the most distinctive visual identities in pop, with sleeve designs that often left out even the band name. After years of lineup changes and hiatuses, including Peter Hook's departure in 2007, they released their tenth studio album Music Complete in 2015. In 2026, Joy Division and New Order were inducted together into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a single act.
