About
Also known as: The Nits
Few Dutch bands have stayed as inventive as long as the Nits. Founded in Amsterdam in 1974, the group built their reputation on a restless, shape shifting sound that moved from new wave and Beatles inflected pop through minimalist piano pieces, orchestral collaborations and kaleidoscopic fairy tale concept albums. The core of singer and lyricist Henk Hofstede, drummer Rob Kloet and keyboard player Robert Jan Stips kept things anchored while the music kept shifting. Their domestic breakthrough came with "Nescio" in 1983, a tribute to the beloved Dutch writer Jan Hendrik Frederik Grönloh, and "In the Dutch Mountains" from 1987 brought them to wider European audiences. Albums like Omsk, Urk and Hotel Europa all cracked the Dutch Top 10, and Urk became a landmark moment when it sold over 100,000 copies as a triple live LP. Songs like "Adieu, Sweet Bahnhof", "J.O.S. Days" and "Sketches of Spain" have remained fan touchstones across decades.
