About
Oene van Geel is a Dutch jazz musician who plays violin and percussion, though over recent years he has increasingly stepped into the role of composer. Born in 1973, he built a reputation that quickly stretched well beyond the Netherlands, performing across Europe, Canada, the United States, India, Russia and Japan. He has led or contributed to a remarkable range of projects, from the Zapp String Quartet to the Delbecq Unit, working alongside names like Mark Turner, Benoît Delbecq and B.C. Manjunath. His composing side has grown steadily too. He has written for ensembles connected to the North Sea Jazz Festival and created work for musicians including Michael Moore and Guus Janssen. In 2013 he received the prestigious Boy Edgar Prize. He also collaborated with Dutch composer Michel Banabila on the two part series Music for Viola and Electronics, a meeting point between acoustic strings and electronic sound design that sits in its own intriguing corner.
