About
Also known as: Olivia Austin
Operelly makes what she calls "tiptoe music", a hushed blend of delicate electronic and acoustic elements shaped by her love of Stereolab and Broadcast. Her songs tend to circle back to relationships, and she has said she's surprised more songwriters don't talk about how a partner can feel uneasy or critical when the lyrics are clearly about them. She wrote poetry, short stories and songs long before she started producing, and she picked up production through the free GarageBand app. After graduating from UC Berkeley, she began splitting her time between Brooklyn and LA. Her debut EP is Handwriting Practice No. 1, and a follow up called Flutters Away tells the story of a relationship that comes apart through miscommunication, with bursts of radio static woven through the arrangements to echo the broken connection in the lyrics.
