About
Petr Popelka wears two hats with real authority: he composes and he conducts, and his trajectory as a conductor has been striking. He spent years as deputy principal double bassist of the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden before pivoting fully toward the podium, picking up mentorship along the way from names like Péter Eötvös and Alan Gilbert, and winning the Neeme Järvi Prize in 2017. His first chief conductorship came with the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, and he has since taken the helm of the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra as chief conductor and artistic director. The bigger news is his appointment as chief conductor of the Vienna Symphony from the 2024 to 2025 season onward, one of the most prestigious gigs in European orchestral life. On top of that, he is set to become Generalmusikdirektor of the Bavarian State Opera and chief conductor of the Bavarian State Orchestra from the 2029 to 2030 season. As a composer, his catalogue includes works like Labyrinth des Herzens and Szenen für Klavierquartett, both from 2015.
