Few American orchestras can claim a history as packed as the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra's. Founded in 1895 and based at the gorgeous Heinz Hall in Pittsburgh, the PSO has been shaped by some of the most demanding conductors in the business, from Fritz Reiner, who championed Bartók's music at a time when audiences barely knew what to make of it, to the current music director Manfred Honeck, who has held the post since 2008. The orchestra was also notably progressive during World War II, bringing in more female performers than any other major American symphony of the era. These days the PSO keeps things lively and approachable, with recent videos ranging from spotlights on rare instruments like the ondes Martenot to collaborations with violinist Ray Chen on Brahms. It's a major ensemble that clearly isn't content to just play it safe, and that willingness to mix the adventurous with the canonical is exactly what's kept it relevant for well over a century.
