About
Protomartyr are a post punk band out of Detroit, and their sound is about as Motor City as it gets: raw, moody, and relentless. Vocalist Joe Casey's deep baritone draws comparisons to Ian Curtis, Mark E. Smith, and Nick Cave, while the band blends the bleak atmospherics of '70s UK post punk with the garage rock grit of their local forebears. Iggy Pop once called them "the best band we've got in America right now," which is a pretty hard endorsement to top. Since forming in 2010, they've built a catalog of six studio albums, with The Agent Intellect from 2015 putting them firmly on the map and landing in year end lists at Rolling Stone, the Chicago Tribune, and beyond. Signing to Domino Records in 2017 gave them wider reach, and they've kept up a steady run of records since, including Formal Growth in the Desert in 2023. Bands like Idles, Shame, and Dehd have cited them as an influence, which says a lot about the mark they've left on modern punk.
