About

Pulsar have a strong claim to a footnote in prog rock history as the first French band to sign with an English label, Kingdom Records. Drawing on Pink Floyd, King Crimson, and classical composers like Gustav Mahler, the band carved out a distinctly cinematic sound across a run of albums in the mid to late 1970s. Their 1977 record Halloween earned a spot on Goldmine Magazine's list of the top 25 progressive rock albums, and the opener lifts the traditional Irish melody Londonderry Air, which is a quietly unexpected move for a French prog outfit. The band's career stretched well beyond the '70s heyday. They stepped into musical theatre in the early '80s, adapting a short story by Austrian novelist Peter Handke for a Franco Austrian stage production. A comeback album, Görlitz, followed in 1989, and they kept going long enough to release Memory Ashes in 2007. Members Gilbert Gandil and Jacques Roman have also been active with the project Siiilk, releasing the album Way to Lhassa in 2013.
