Son of jazz legends John and Alice Coltrane, Ravi Coltrane has spent decades carving out an identity entirely his own on the tenor and soprano saxophone. Working across post bop and contemporary jazz, he spent years as a highly sought sideman before stepping out as a leader with Moving Pictures in 1997, a debut built around a tight core band that included drummer Jeff Watts and bassist Lonnie Plaxico. From there he kept pushing, recording From the Round Box with Geri Allen and Ralph Alessi, and landing a Sony deal for Mad 6 in 2002. His catalog since then runs deep, from In Flux through Spirit Fiction on Blue Note, and he has collaborated with a remarkable range of players including McCoy Tyner, Pharoah Sanders, Herbie Hancock, and Carlos Santana. He was also part of the Blue Note 7 septet formed for the label's 70th anniversary, contributing to the celebrated Mosaic album. As co owner of RKM Music, he has also put energy into producing records for other artists, keeping his fingerprints across a broad stretch of the jazz world.
