About
Remy van Kesteren is one of those rare musicians who can make you forget the harp is a classical instrument. The Dutch harpist from Zeist has performed everywhere from Carnegie Hall to Night of the Proms, where he silenced 500,000 people with Smetana's Die Moldau as the only classical soloist on a bill alongside pop acts like Anastacia and the Jacksons. His albums move across a wide range of sounds: his 2019 record Shadows is built entirely on his own compositions, layering harps with modular synthesizers, horns, drums, and a Rhodes, with Fink as co producer. Beyond performing, Van Kesteren co designed the Réus 49, a custom harp with 49 strings instead of the standard 47, a built in damping mechanism, and the ability to be played both acoustically and electrically amplified. He also founded the Dutch Harp Festival and its accompanying World Harp Competition. His trophy shelf is serious: he won the USA International Harp Competition in 2013 and the Dutch Music Prize in 2016, the highest classical music honour from the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science.
