Few bands have shaped symphonic power metal quite like Rhapsody of Fire. Founded in Trieste by guitarist Luca Turilli and keyboardist Alex Staropoli, the band built their reputation on sweeping fantasy concept albums, most famously the Emerald Sword Saga, a multi album story steeped in medieval folklore and the battle between good and evil. Songs like "Emerald Sword" blended Russian and Celtic influences into something that felt closer to a film score than a metal record, and that cinematic scale became their trademark. The band has gone through significant lineup shifts over the years, with Turilli departing in 2011 and vocalist Fabio Lione following in 2016. Staropoli kept things going with a rebuilt lineup featuring vocalist Giacomo Voli and guitarist Roberto De Micheli, launching a new arc called the Nephilim's Empire Saga. That trilogy wrapped up with Challenge the Wind in 2024, and the band has been playing major festivals including a set at Hellfest that same year.
