Rise Against built their reputation on a sound that pairs aggressive, rapid fire punk rock with melodies sharp enough to stick around long after the song ends. The Chicago band, formed in 1999 under the name Transistor Revolt, broke through to mainstream audiences with Siren Song of the Counter Culture, but it was Appeal to Reason's single "Savior" that set a chart record for the most consecutive weeks on both the Hot Rock Songs and Alternative Songs charts. Endgame pushed them even further, peaking at number two on the Billboard 200. Beyond the music, Rise Against is unusually outspoken for a punk band at their level of commercial reach. Most members are straight edge vegans, PETA supporters, and backers of causes like Amnesty International and the It Gets Better Project. Their lyrics dig into politics, animal rights, environmentalism, and humanitarianism, and they never pretend otherwise. Ten albums in, they show no sign of softening that stance.
