About
Also known as: Ryo Terakado
Ryo Terakado is a Japanese violinist and conductor with a serious commitment to historically informed performance, meaning he plays music on period instruments the way it would have sounded in its own time. Alongside the violin, he plays viola, viola d'amore, and even the violoncello da spalla, a small cello braced against the shoulder rather than resting on the floor. He used that last instrument to record Bach's Cello Suites, which is exactly the kind of curious, scholarly move that defines his career. He studied Baroque violin under Sigiswald Kuijken in the late 1980s and went on to serve as concertmaster for some of Europe's finest period ensembles, including Les Arts Florissants, La Petite Bande, and Collegium Vocale Gent. He has long been concertmaster of Bach Collegium Japan, contributing to their landmark complete Bach cantata recordings under Masaaki Suzuki. As a conductor he has tackled Baroque opera by Purcell, Rameau, and Lully, and he teaches at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague.
