About
Sam Gendel is a saxophonist and producer from Visalia, California whose work sits at the crossroads of jazz, ambient, and experimental music, and who seems constitutionally incapable of making a straightforward record. His 2020 Nonesuch debut Satin Doll was pitched as a futuristic homage to historical jazz, and a year later he dropped Fresh Bread, a sprawling three hour, 52 track collection built from recordings spanning 2012 to 2020. His 2023 album Cookup takes R&B classics and bends them into something distinctly his own. Gendel collaborates constantly. He has worked with bassist Sam Wilkes across multiple projects, co wrote tracks on Vampire Weekend's Father of the Bride, and recorded sessions with Pino Palladino and Blake Mills. The breadth of names he has recorded with, from Nosaj Thing to Fabiano do Nascimento to Emile Mosseri, gives some sense of how widely his sound travels. There is also persistent speculation that he is one half of the avant garde duo Clown Core, which somehow feels completely on brand.
