About
Sam Gendel and Sam Wilkes first found each other playing improvised sets in Los Angeles restaurants, a decidedly low key origin for two musicians who would go on to work with some serious names. Their sound as a duo lands somewhere between hiphop production and well worn funk and jazz records, built from nothing more than saxophone and bass guitar. They both played together in KNOWER, the band led by drummer Louis Cole, before breaking through as a duo with the live album Music for Saxofone and Bass Guitar in 2018. After that they each branched out on their own: Gendel collaborated with Ry Cooder and Vampire Weekend, while Wilkes worked alongside Chaka Khan, Rufus Wainwright and Jacob Collier. They eventually reunited to record The Doober, bringing that instinctive two instrument chemistry back to the foreground.
