About
Also known as: Samba Toure
Samba Touré carries a reputation that cuts both ways: he is often called the natural successor to the late Ali Farka Touré, yet he is equally known as an "anti Griot" for the way he bends and breaks West African musical tradition. That tension is exactly what makes him interesting. Rooted in Songhai blues and desert music, the Malian guitarist and singer has built a discography that stretches across two decades and multiple labels, eventually landing with Glitterbeat Records where some of his strongest work has appeared. His 2015 album Gandadiko, shaped by the trauma of the Mali War, climbed to number two on the World Music Charts Europe and showed just how politically charged his music can be. Binga followed in 2021 and took Best Artist of the Year at the Songlines Music Awards. His most recent album, Baarakelaw, came out in 2024 and was recorded under genuinely difficult conditions, with power outages constantly interrupting sessions during an energy crisis in 2023. Along the way he has shared stages with B.B. King, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne and Angélique Kidjo, among others.
