About

Séverine, born Josiane Grizeau, is best known for winning the Eurovision Song Contest in 1971, representing Monaco with "Un banc, un arbre, une rue." The song was a genuine pan European hit, reaching number one in Sweden, number two in the Benelux countries, and number nine on the UK Singles Chart. It was recorded in four languages, French, English, German, and Italian, which tells you something about how big the moment was. After that peak she kept a solid foothold in France and Germany, charting with a string of singles throughout the 1970s and into the 1980s. She even covered Cliff Richard's 1973 Eurovision entry and Goombay Dance Band's "Seven Tears" for the German market. She made two more runs at Eurovision via the German national finals, in 1975 and 1982, though neither attempt made it through. She remained connected to the contest world, accompanying Monaco's delegation to the 2006 event in Athens.
