About

Few bands have taken black metal somewhere quite as strange and compelling as Sigh. Founded in Tokyo in 1989, they caught the ear of Euronymous, the Norwegian black metal figure behind Deathlike Silence Records, who released their debut Scorn Defeat in 1993. That record was already bending genre rules, pairing black metal with symphonic elements in ways that felt genuinely new at the time. From there, Sigh kept pushing further out. Their 2001 album Imaginary Sonicscape got credited with pioneering a kind of surrealist black metal, and by the time they released Heir to Despair in 2018, frontman Mirai Kawashima had learned flute specifically for the record, which wove in traditional Japanese, Middle Eastern, and Central Asian sounds. The 2022 follow up Shiki continued down that road. Saxophonist Dr. Mikannibal is very much part of what makes their live and studio sound so distinctive. Prolific and genuinely hard to categorise, they are the name that keeps coming up whenever anyone talks about Japanese progressive black metal.
