About
Enslaved have spent over three decades reshaping what extreme metal can be. Formed in Haugesund, Norway in 1991 by Ivar Bjørnson and Grutle Kjellson, the band started out as a raw black metal outfit but gradually pulled the genre in a far more expansive direction, weaving Norse mythology and Viking cultural heritage into music that now sits comfortably alongside progressive rock as much as anything else. Their 2008 album Vertebrae was named album of the year by Terrorizer, with critics noting its surprising depth and Pink Floyd comparisons. That willingness to push outward never stopped: in 2014 the Norwegian government commissioned the band to compose a piece marking the 200th anniversary of the Norwegian constitution, eventually released as the album Skuggsjá. Their sixteenth studio album, Heimdal, arrived in 2023, with Bjørnson and Kjellson still the beating heart of the band after more than thirty years.
