About
Also known as: Sophie Junker Cabrera
Belgian soprano Sophie Junker has built her reputation squarely in the world of Baroque opera, with a particular focus on Handel that goes far beyond casual interest. Her breakthrough came when she won the London Handel Competition in 2010, followed two years later by the international Cesti Competition at the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music, two of the most prestigious prizes in the early music field. Since then she has sung across Europe and beyond, taking on roles in Monteverdi, Purcell, Vivaldi and Rameau as well as Handel, performing at venues from the Staatsoper Berlin to the Royal Opera of Versailles. Her 2020 album La Francesina, a portrait of the Handel singer Elisabeth Duparc, swept up four major prizes including the International Classical Music Awards best Baroque vocal album of the year, and stands as a strong case for what she does best: bringing the ornate, expressive world of eighteenth century vocal music to vivid life.
